Virginia Union University's
Shareka McNeill scored 26 points as VUU defeated Cheyney University 106-25 in a record-setting performance on the opening day of the Lady Panther Tip-Off Classic held at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
In all, five Lady Panthers reached double-figures in the win. Newcomer
Bianca Lockamy scored 15 points while
Jasmine Carter added 13 points.Â
Nicole Floyd and
Kishona Sutton scored 12 points apiece.
Floyd also had 11 rebounds in the win.
"We've had four exhibitions and scrimmages, and we've scored over a 100 points in each one, so I'm really excited that we were able to do that in a real game" said VUU Head Coach
AnnMarie Gilbert. "We hit 14 three-pointers, and I don't remember the last time we did that in a game. What a great way to start the season, with so many weapons clicking on all cylinders."
The 81-point margin of victory also wiped out the previous record of 62 points, set in a 119-57 win over Fayetteville State University in 1983.
Virginia Union will now play 11th-ranked Edinboro University on the second day of the VUU Lady Panther Tip-Off Classic at 4:00 p.m. in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
