First Quarter Explosion Propels VUU to 28-7 Win

Box Score Virginia Union University's football team scored three touchdowns in the first quarter to send the Panthers to a 28-7 win over Saint Augustine's University on Saturday, September 30, in Raleigh, N.C.

The three touchdowns came in a span of seven minutes as the Panthers struck quickly and often.

After giving up a game-opening scoring drive to the Falcons, VUU went to work.  Virginia Union's Arron Baker capped a nine-play, 67-yard drive, with a four-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 with eight minutes left in the first quarter.

After holding Saint Augustine's to a punt, VUU's Darius Taylor went to the air, hitting Jewison Dawkins with a 60-yard bomb to give the Panthers a 14-7 lead with 5:12 left in the first quarter.

With the Falcons again forced to punt, VUU took over on their own 28-yard line.  On the fifth play from scrimmage, however, Taylor again hit Dawkins, this time for a 34-yard touchdown pass.

Then the Panthers' defense went to work.  With Saint Augustine's forced to punt from their own four-yard line, VUU's Chazton McKenzie broke through the line and blocked the Falcons' punt.  Virginia Union's Christopher Lee scooped it up at the four-yard line and took it in for the Panthers' final touchdown on the day.

It was the third time this season a Panther player has returned a punt for a touchdown.  The school-record for punts returned by VUU for a touchdown in a single season is four (set in 1931, 1939, 1972 and 1981).

Taylor completed 15 of 33 passes for 207 yards in the air.  Dawkins finished with four receptions for 136 yards.

Dawkins' average of 34 yards per catch is the highest average gain per reception for a Panther football player since Michael Hampton's school-record 45.8 yards per catch against Tuskegee in 2007.

VUU's Sterling Hammond led the Panthers with seven tackles while getting his fourth interception of the season.

Virginia Union's D'Andre Walker also picked off a Saint Augustine's pass.

The win raised VUU's record to 3-2 on the season and kept the Panthers undefeated in CIAA play at 2-0.  The Falcons fell to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA.

Virginia Union now travels to Lincoln University, Pa., to face Lincoln (Pa.) University at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 7.
