Virginia Union University's
RJ Rosales completed 13 of 22 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns as VUU defeated Chowan University 34-19 on Saturday, September 12, in Murfreesboro, N.C.
The victory improves Virginia Union to 2-1 overall. The Panthers rolled up 505 yards of total offense, including 251 rushing yards and 254 passing yards.
Rosales connected with
Montrell Wright on a 36-yard touchdown pass with 10:00 remaining in the second quarter to give VUU a 21-13 advantage. Wright finished the game with five receptions for 157 yards and a touchdown, including the 36-yard scoring reception.
Rosales later found
Ben Haulmark for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 8:12 remaining in the third quarter. Haulmark finished with two receptions for 24 yards and the touchdown.
Virginia Union's
Ramon Brown led the Panthers' ground attack with 105 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Brown's three-yard touchdown run with 2:55 remaining in the first half gave VUU a 14-6 lead.
Travon Tensley added 58 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, while
Jerome Jones rushed 14 times for 61 yards.
The Panthers took a 21-13 lead into halftime and added 10 points in the third quarter to take a 31-13 advantage. VUU's
Gage Miller added a fourth-quarter field goal to close out the scoring.
Defensively, Virginia Union recorded three sacks and eight pass breakups.
Ahmad Ross led the Panthers with 10 total tackles, while
Jessiah Gildersleeve added five tackles and four pass breakups.
Xavier Belton,
Cameron McDaniel and
Shimyael Holt each recorded a sack.
"Chowan is always a tough place to play, and I was proud of our team for putting together a complete four-quarter effort," said VUU Head Football Coach Dr. Alvin Parker. "There was a lot of good out there today, but as always, there are still some things we can clean up and improve. We'll enjoy this one, learn from it, and get back to work."
Virginia Union now returns home to face Bluefield State University at Hovey Field in Richmond, Va., at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19.
