VUU Knocks Off Fayetteville State 22-16

Box Score Virginia Union University's William Stanback rushed for three touchdowns for the second consecutive game as VUU defeated Fayetteville State University 22-16 on Saturday, September 24, in Fayetteville, N.C.

Stanback carried the ball 31 times and racked up 199 yards.  The senior from Hempstead, N.Y., now leads the CIAA in rushing with an average of 129 yards per game.  He also leads the CIAA with seven rushing touchdowns in four games.

VUU's Kenneth Graham was six-for-10 in passing for 49 yards while backup quarterback Kevin Green came on in relief and rushed for 51 yards.

Virginia Union opened the scoring with a 28-yard field goal by JeanClaude Brooks with 8:34 left in the first quarter.

After a Bronco touchdown, VUU retook the lead when Stanback took the ball in from three yards out with 7:10 left in the half.  

FSU hit a 37-yard field goal to make the score 10-9 in favor of Union at halftime.

In the third quarter, Stanback gave VUU a 16-9 lead by taking the ball in from 12 yards out.

FSU tied the score at 16-16 with a TD with 4:45 left in the third quarter, but then Stanback broke away for a 45-yard run to secure a 22-16 lead that the Panthers would not reliquish.

"I think Fayetteville State came out and did a great job," Virginia Union coach Mark James said. "Their guys played hard and gave everything they had for their coach and their program. Tons of respect for those guys."

The win evened VUU's record at 2-2 overall and 1-0 in CIAA play.  Fayetteville State fell to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the CIAA.

Virginia Union now returns home to Historic Hovey Field when the Panthers take on Saint Augustine's University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, in Richmond, Va.
