Box Score Virginia Union University's
Shawheem Dowdy set school records with by completing 31 of 68 passes against Chowan, but the Hawks snapped VUU's four-game winning streak by defeating the Panthers 54-21 on Saturday, October 15, in Murfreesboro, N.C.
Dowdy's 31 completions broke the school-record of 29 that Dowdy set against Slippery Rock University on November 21, 2015, in the NCAA Playoffs. Â His 68 attemps also broke the school-record of 54, set by Carl Wright against Indiana University of Pennsylvania on November 23, 1991.
Dowdy racked up 380 yards and two touchdowns through the air, the third-highest yardage total in the history of the school. Â Only Lamar Little's 455 yards (2007) and Carl Wright's 406 yards (1990) bested Dowdy's performance.
VUU's
Lavatiae Kelly had eight receptions for 127 yards while
Jusse Yorke had 10 catches, one of which resulted in a touchdown.
Virginia Union's
William Stanback rushed for his 11th touchdown of the season and also caught a pass for another score.
The loss drops VUU to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in CIAA play. Â Chowan is now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA.
Virginia Union now returns to Historic Hovey Field to face Bowie State University in a nationally-televised game on ESPN 3 which could determine the champion of the CIAA Northern Division. Â The Panthers and the Bulldogs kickoff at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22, in Richmond, Va.
