Dowdy Completes School-Record 28 passes

Box Score Virginia Union University's Shawheem Dowdy completed a school-record 28 of 40 passes for 399 yards and three touchdowns, but Bowie State University defeated VUU 23-19 on Saturday, October 24, in Bowie, Md.

Dowdy's 28 completions broke the VUU school record of 27, set by Carl Wright in 1990 and 1991.

His 399 yards were the third highest in school history.  VUU's Lamar Little passed for 455 yards in 2007 and Carl Wright passed for 406 yards in 1990.

Dowdy passed for his first touchdown by connecting on a 10-yard pass to Chazton McKenzie with 12:23 left in the second quarter.

The junior quarterback connected with freshman Shaquille Mitchum with a 52-yard bomb at 2:42 left in the first half.

Dowdy capped his scoring day with an 18-yard pass to Olu Izegwire with 4:36 left in the third quarter.  The Panthers had a chance to tie the game, but Bowie State's Brian Hall intercepted Dowdy's pass on the two-point conversion attempt and returned it all the way for a 2-point defensive PAT.

The loss dropped VUU to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in Northern Division play of the CIAA.  VUU is now 4-1 in CIAA play overall.  Bowie State is now 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the divisional plays.

VUU now faces Elizabeth City State University in the home finale of the 2015 season at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, in Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.
