Virginia Union University's
Latrell Sutton caught two touchdown passes as the Panthers shut out Bluefield State University 42-0 on Saturday, September 19, at Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.
Sutton finished the game with three catches for 50 yards, including touchdown receptions of 24 and 17 yards.
Montrell Wright added four receptions for 55 yards, including a 26-yard reception, while VUU quarterback
RJ Rosales completed 10 of 19 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown.
The Panthers totaled 414 yards of offense, including 259 rushing yards and 155 passing yards. VUU also recorded 24 first downs.
VUU's biggest play of the night came in the second quarter when
Zyaire Tart returned a Bluefield State punt 79 yards for a touchdown. Tart finished with four punt returns for 140 yards.
Virginia Union opened the scoring in the first quarter when
Tavon McGee scored on a two-yard touchdown run. Tart's 79-yard punt return and a six-yard touchdown run by
Travon Tensley extended the Panthers' lead to 21-0 at halftime.
Raphael Tucker added a 31-yard touchdown run in the third quarter before Sutton's two fourth-quarter touchdown receptions completed the scoring.
The Panthers' defense held Bluefield State to just 106 yards of total offense. VUU recorded six sacks, eight tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and an interception.
"After a fantastic week of practice, I was thrilled to see our guys perform the way they did today," said VUU Head Football Coach Dr. Alvin Parker. "Our defense played lights out, and our offense and special teams complemented each other very well. I'm going to let the guys enjoy this one tonight, but tomorrow it's right back to work."
Ramon Brown led the Panthers with 89 rushing yards on 14 carries, while
Jerome Jones added 64 yards on seven carries and
Travon Tensley rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown.
Virginia Union will now travel to Fayetteville, N.C., to face Fayetteville State University on Saturday, September 26.
