Hakeem Holland rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers improved to 6-1 with a 33-14 win over Chowan University on Saturday, October 17, in Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.
It's the first time VUU has started 6-1 since the 2007 season.
VUU scored 30 straight points in the third quarter while the VUU defense, ranked #1 in the nation, held Chowan to -5 yards rushing.
With the Panthers trailing 7-3 a halftime, Holland broke free on the first play from scrimmage in the second half and ran 79 yards to give VUU a lead they would never relinquish.
VUU rushed for four touchdowns on the day, two from Holland and one each from
Olu Izegwire and
Lamar Webster.
The defense shut down the Hawks' offense, with
Paulin Miano getting 12 tackles, three sacks, and forcing two fumbles. Miano and
Karl Calhoun came in and scored a safety by tackling the Chowan quarterback in his own end zone.
It was the third safety for the VUU defense this season.
The Panthers are now 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA while Chowan dropped to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA.
Virginia Union travels to Bowie, Md., on Saturday, October 24, to face Bowie State University at 1:00 p.m.
