Joe Taylor was promoted to Vice-President of Intercollegiate Athletics and Community Wellness at Virginia Union University in July, 2019.
He was appointed the ninth Director of Athletics at Virginia Union University in a press conference held on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, in the L. Douglas Wilder Library on the VUU campus in Richmond, Va.
Since 2014, the Athletic Department has honored over 500 student-athletes for GPAs over 3.0 or higher. The athletic department has won 15 divisional, conference and regional championships since 2014.
The Athletic Staff has earned Senior Woman Administrator of the Year, Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year, Cross-Country Coach of the Year, National Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, National Assistant Football Coach of the Year, National Female in Coaching Award by the USATF, Athletic Director of the Year, and a student-athlete graduation rate of over 60%.
Coach Joe Taylor is a legend in college football. He has won 4 National Championships, 14 Conference Championships, 7 Bowl Games, and has a lifetime win-loss record of 233-96-4. He is respected with the likes of Eddie Robinson and Jake Gaither.
As a Head Football Coach he has transformed the lives of thousands of young men over his forty years of coaching. He was the head football coach at Florida A&M University from 2008-2012, and prior to FAMU, he was the head football coach at Hampton University from 1992 to 2007. He was also the head coach at Virginia Union University from 1984 to 1991 where he won one conference title on his way to an overall record of 60–19–3 (.750). His career at 233-96-4, ranks third in career victories and fourth in career winning percentage among active coaches in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS, formerly I-AA), and third in HBCU history behind Eddie Robinson and John Merritt.
Coach Taylor has been elected to seven Hall of Fames: Western Illinois University, Virginia Union University, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, and the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame. Coach Taylor has served on numerous committees, including the American Football Coaches Association, was on the Board of Trustees, and became President in 2001.
On December 10, 2019, Coach Taylor was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame at the Hall of Fame’s annual banquet in New York, N.Y.
Coach Taylor was also inducted into the Black College Hall of Fame in February of 2020.
He has been honored by the following organizations for his induction in the College Football Hall of Fame:

Joe Taylor’s college education started at Western Illinois University where he received a B.S. in Health and Physical Education in August, 1972. He obtained his Masters of Administration and Supervision at Eastern Illinois University in May, 1979.
He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and a member of the JRE Lee Chapter of the Mason Prince Hall of Shriners. He is the author of the book “The Making of a Champion - Success is an Inconvenience.”
In the summer of 2015, he was inducted into the Washington DMV Athletes in Action Legends Organization. He and his wife Beverly are proud parents of sons, Aaron and Dennis.
