Clifford Fortune enters his first season at Virginia Union University in 2026, serving as the Panthers’ Assistant Defensive Line Coach. Fortune joins Head Coach Dr. Alvin Parker’s staff as VUU looks to continue its championship tradition and run of four consecutive NCAA Division II Playoff appearances.
A native of Madison County, Virginia, Fortune was a standout defensive end and linebacker at Madison County High School, helping lead the program to a district championship and multiple playoff appearances. He continued his playing career at Norfolk State University, where he competed on the defensive line under Head Coach Pete Adrian.
Fortune began his coaching career in 2017 as Defensive Line Coach at Charlottesville High School. Since then, he has gained extensive experience developing and training athletes at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels. His background in individual skill development, strength training, and performance gives him a unique perspective as he begins his collegiate coaching career.
In addition to his football experience, Fortune brings an accomplished background in strength and conditioning. A former World Champion powerlifter, he has earned world and national records and has also competed as a nationally ranked bodybuilder. His experiences as an athlete, trainer, and coach have shaped a development philosophy centered on discipline, technique, strength, consistency, and maximizing individual potential.
As Assistant Defensive Line Coach, Fortune will assist with the development and preparation of Virginia Union’s defensive front while contributing to a defensive unit that has been an important part of the Panthers’ recent championship and postseason success.
Fortune is the son of Laura and Clifford Fortune Sr. and was raised in Madison County alongside his six brothers and sisters. Away from football, he enjoys spending time with his son, Maddox, being with family, and playing video games.
