Solomon Brown enters his fifth season at Virginia Union University, where he has established one of the CIAA's premier defensive line units and helped build one of the most dominant defenses in program history.
Since joining the Panthers in 2022, Brown has played a key role in Virginia Union's sustained success, helping lead the program to back-to-back CIAA Championships, an NCAA Division II Quarterfinal appearance in 2024, and an undefeated conference record in 2025. His leadership and development of the defensive front have been instrumental in the Panthers becoming one of the top defensive teams in the nation.
Under Brown's guidance, Virginia Union's rushing defense made an immediate transformation. After allowing 169.5 rushing yards per game in 2021, the Panthers reduced that number to 76.2 yards per game in 2022 and an elite 51.7 yards per game in 2023, finishing No. 1 nationally in rushing defense. The Panthers also surrendered only three rushing touchdowns during the 2023 season while consistently creating disruption and pressure in opposing backfields. In 2025, Brown's defensive line helped anchor the CIAA's top-ranked defense during conference play.
Brown's impact extends beyond game-day performance. His defensive line unit has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher every year since 2022, contributing to Virginia Union earning the highest team GPA in the conference in two of the last three years. His commitment to developing student athletes both on and off the field reflects his holistic approach to coaching and mentorship.
Throughout his tenure, Brown has coached and developed numerous All-Conference performers, including:
- Isaac Anderson - Cliff Harris Award nominee, two-time First Team All-CIAA selection, and 15.1-career tackles for loss.
- Kamari Federick - CIAA Defensive All-Rookie Team selection and 2025 Second Team All-CIAA honoree.
- Armonii Burden - Recorded 9.5 tackles for loss and 8 sacks during the 2022 season.
Recognizing his contributions to the program's success, Brown was promoted to Defensive Run Game Coordinator in 2023, expanding his responsibilities in shaping Virginia Union's defensive identity. He also represented the Panthers at the prestigious HBCU Legacy Bowl, where he coached alongside some of the top coaches and student-athletes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the country.
Before arriving at Virginia Union, Brown served as Defensive Line Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at East Central University from 2019 to 2021. His coaching career also includes stops at Midwestern State University, Lackawanna College, and James Madison University, where he gained experience in player development, recruiting, and defensive strategy.
Brown recruits high school prospects throughout Northern Virginia and is a proud father of a daughter pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering at Mississippi State University.
