Edward Pointer enters his ninth season in 2026 at Virginia Union University as Assistant Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and Linebackers Coach. A former Panther student-athlete and longtime member of the VUU football family, Pointer has been instrumental in helping Head Coach Dr. Alvin Parker build Virginia Union into one of the premier programs in NCAA Division II football.
Under Pointer’s defensive leadership, the Panthers have experienced one of the most successful stretches in program history, making four consecutive NCAA Division II Playoff appearances from 2022–2025, advancing to three consecutive CIAA Championship Games, and capturing back-to-back CIAA Championships in 2023 and 2024. The 2024 Panthers advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Playoffs, marking the deepest postseason run in program history and the program’s first NCAA playoff victory.
Pointer’s impact and sustained defensive excellence earned him one of the highest individual honors in the coaching profession when he was named the 2023 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) NCAA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year. The national award recognized not only the performance of his defense, but also his leadership, commitment to student-athlete development, and impact on the Virginia Union football program.
The 2023 season showcased Pointer’s defensive philosophy at its best. Virginia Union led the nation in rushing defense at just 51.7 yards per game, surrendered only three rushing touchdowns all season, forced 28 turnovers, and finished third nationally in total defense at 232.8 yards per game. The Panthers’ defensive dominance helped VUU capture its first CIAA Championship since 2001 and earn another NCAA Division II Playoff appearance. The unit also produced 10 All-CIAA selections.
Pointer’s defenses continued their high level of play in 2024 and 2025, producing multiple shutouts and consistently ranking among the CIAA and NCAA Division II leaders in several defensive categories. Over the past eight seasons, the Panthers have allowed an average of just 95.8 rushing yards, 190.5 passing yards, and 17.43 points per game. His units have consistently been defined by toughness, discipline, physicality, and the ability to create turnovers and stop the run.
His success goes well beyond statistics. Pointer has built a reputation as an outstanding developer of defensive talent, consistently producing All-CIAA and All-American performers while preparing student-athletes for opportunities beyond college football. Throughout his coaching career, he has mentored 48 All-CIAA players, five All-Americans, and two players who advanced to the NFL.
Before his current tenure at Virginia Union, Pointer spent two seasons at Saint Augustine’s University (2016–2017), serving as Defensive Coordinator in his final season. Under his leadership, the Falcons ranked among the top three in the CIAA in scoring defense, tied for first in the conference with 31 sacks, and produced multiple All-CIAA selections.
Pointer also coached at Elizabeth City State University from 2014–2015, working with the running backs and tight ends. It marked his second stint at ECSU after previously serving as an assistant from 2005–2007.
Pointer’s connection to Virginia Union extends across multiple generations of Panther Football. He previously coached at VUU from 2009–2010 and from 1998–2003, including serving on the staff that helped Virginia Union capture the 2001 CIAA Championship. His career has included numerous CIAA Championship Game appearances, giving him extensive experience coaching in championship environments.
A native of Richmond, Virginia, Pointer was a standout linebacker at Virginia Union from 1994–1997. Following his collegiate career, he signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League before a leg injury ended his professional playing career.
Pointer earned his Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems from Virginia Union University in 2000. His deep connection to his alma mater, combined with his national recognition and championship experience, has made him an integral part of the culture and sustained success of Virginia Union Football.
