Dr. Alvin Parker, a distinguished alumnus of Virginia Union University and native of Washington, D.C., was named the 27th Head Football Coach of VUU on December 18, 2017. As he prepares to lead the program into his ninth season in Fall 2026, Dr. Parker has cemented his legacy as one of the premier leaders in HBCU and NCAA Division II football, recognized for his championship success, player development, and commitment to excellence both on and off the field. Since August 2021, he has also served as the University's Associate Director of Athletics, further expanding his leadership impact across VUU Athletics.
Beyond his role at VUU, Dr. Parker is a nationally respected figure in collegiate athletics. He currently serves as a member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Board of Trustees, President of the CIAA Coaches Association, and Founder and President of Home Team Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to youth development, mentorship, and community enrichment.
Under Dr. Parker's leadership, the Panthers have emerged as a national force within NCAA Division II football. Entering the 2026 season, he holds an impressive 60-19 (.759) overall record, ranking among the winningest active coaches in NCAA Division I and II football. His tenure has produced back-to-back CIAA Championships, four consecutive NCAA Division II Playoff appearances, and the first NCAA playoff victory in school history during the Panthers' Elite Eight run.
Dr. Parker has built a championship culture centered around his nationally recognized PLAY411 philosophy, emphasizing Purpose, Leadership, Accountability, Your Why, and the importance of all 11 players doing their job. His programs are defined by discipline, development, and relentless WORK, helping student-athletes grow both athletically and personally.
The 2025 season added another historic milestone to the program as standout student-athlete Curtis Allen captured the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy, awarded annually to the top player in NCAA Division II football. With Allen's achievement, Dr. Parker became the first HBCU Head Football Coach in history to coach a Harlon Hill Trophy winner, further elevating the national profile of Virginia Union University football and HBCU athletics.
The 2024 season was also historic for the Panthers and the University. VUU finished 10-4, captured another CIAA Championship, advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, and earned a No. 11 final national ranking. Offensively, the Panthers became one of the most explosive units in the nation, averaging 45 points and nearly 500 yards per game, while ranking second nationally in passing efficiency and recording seven 500-yard offensive performances.
Dr. Parker's leadership has also extended beyond wins and championships. Under his direction, the Panthers earned the Freddie Vaughns Award for the highest team GPA in the CIAA in both 2023 and 2024, reflecting the program's commitment to academic excellence and holistic student-athlete development.
The Panthers' rise under Dr. Parker has been fueled by elite recruiting, intentional player development, and a championship-driven culture. During his tenure, he has coached numerous All-Americans, All-CIAA performers, national award winners, and professional prospects while helping student-athletes maximize their potential academically, athletically, and personally. His commitment to player development has produced national recognition, including Jada Byers, who finished fourth in the 2024 Harlon Hill Trophy voting while earning the Deacon Jones Trophy as the nation's top HBCU football player, and Curtis Allen, who captured both the 2025 Deacon Jones Trophy and the 2025 Harlon Hill Trophy, giving Virginia Union back-to-back Deacon Jones Award winners and making Dr. Parker the first HBCU Head Football Coach to coach a Harlon Hill Trophy winner.
Before beginning his coaching career, Dr. Parker was an outstanding student-athlete at Virginia Union University. As a standout running back, he earned Offensive MVP honors in both the 1996 and 1998 seasons, establishing himself as one of the program's most productive offensive players. His experience as a Panther continues to shape his coaching philosophy, emphasizing player development, accountability, and the pursuit of championship excellence.
Prior to returning to lead his alma mater, Dr. Parker built a reputation as one of the top offensive minds in NCAA Division II football during successful coaching stints at Saint Augustine's University and Elizabeth City State University, where his offenses consistently ranked among the nation's best.
A scholar-practitioner, Dr. Parker holds a Doctorate in Education with a specialization in Sport Management from Northcentral University, a Master's degree in Sport Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication/Journalism from Virginia Union University. He is also the author of Stronger Than Pride and PLAY411 Leadership, two books centered on perseverance, leadership, accountability, and personal growth. Through his writing, coaching, and mentorship, Dr. Parker continues to share his philosophy of developing leaders, building championship cultures, and inspiring others to maximize their purpose both in sports and in life.
Dr. Parker resides in Richmond, Virginia, with his wife, LaToya. He is the proud father of his son, Alan, and daughter, Lani.
