FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Virginia Union University women's basketball team dropped a CIAA road contest to Fayetteville State University, 59–40, on Thursday evening at Capel Arena.
Virginia Union found itself trailing early, as Fayetteville State held a 15–11 advantage after the first quarter. The Broncos used a strong second quarter to create separation, outscoring the Panthers 20–9 heading into halftime. Despite continued effort on both ends of the floor, Virginia Union was unable to close the gap over the final two periods.
Bruni Martinez led the Panthers offensively with a team-high 13 points and provided a steady presence throughout the game. Virginia Union continued to battle defensively but struggled to find consistent scoring opportunities against Fayetteville State's pressure and execution.
"We didn't do a good job of executing," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach Alico Dunk. "We settled for jump shots. Tonight wasn't a reflection of who we are as a team."
With the loss, the Panthers look to regroup as conference play continues.
