RICHMOND, Va. – Shaw University used a strong fourth-quarter surge to defeat Virginia Union University, 79–73, in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Barco-Stevens Hall.
Virginia Union trailed 41–31 at halftime but responded with an impressive third quarter, outscoring Shaw 27–11 to take a 58–52 lead heading into the final period. Shaw answered with a decisive 27-point fourth quarter, regaining control of the game down the stretch to secure the road victory.
Senior guard
Bruni Martinez delivered a standout performance for Virginia Union, leading all scorers with
25 points while also contributing
13 rebounds to anchor the Panthers' presence on the boards. Martinez's rebounding performance came in crucial moments — both on the offensive glass to create second-chance opportunities and defensively to limit Shaw's transition chances — underscoring her all-around impact on the game. She consistently attacked the basket and provided a steady offensive presence throughout the contest, scoring in a variety of ways and serving as a vocal leader on the floor.
Maya Robinson added 13 points, while
Deaishjah Somerville contributed 12 points for Virginia Union in the competitive matchup.
Shaw was led by
D'Ayzha Atkinson, who recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Shaw shot efficiently from the perimeter and converted consistently at the free-throw line, capitalizing on opportunities in the closing minutes to seal the win.

Alico Dunk credited Shaw's execution.
"Shaw played a good game and they had a great game plan," said Dunk. "They made us shoot over the top and they were just the better team tonight. They out-executed us, they played harder than we played and I guess we thought we were already on Christmas break."
Virginia Union will return to action on
January 6, when the Panthers travel to
Raleigh, N.C., for a rematch against Shaw University.
