Virginia Union University's women's basketball team dropped its season opener on the road, falling 66–58 to Chowan University on Monday evening inside the Hawks Athletic Center in Murfreesboro, N.C.
The Panthers (0–1) battled through a tight, defensive first half and trailed by just one at halftime, 27–26, before Chowan used a strong fourth quarter to pull away. The Hawks outscored VUU 24–16 in the final period to seal the victory.
Sophomore
Maya Robinson led Virginia Union with
17 points, knocking down two three-pointers while adding four rebounds and one steal.
De'aisjah Somerville delivered a big all-around performance with
16 points,
four assists,
four rebounds, and
two steals, while
Hailey Blackwell added
eight points,
four steals, and four rebounds.
Despite forcing
29 Chowan turnovers, the Panthers struggled to capitalize consistently, committing
23 turnovers of their own. Rebounding proved pivotal as the Hawks held a
45–31 advantage on the glass, including 18 offensive boards that led to multiple second-chance opportunities.
Chowan was also more efficient at the free-throw line, connecting on
17 of 26 attempts, while VUU went just
4 of 7 at the stripe.
The Hawks were fueled by a standout shooting night from
Daneesha Briggs, who scored a game-high
22 points, including
six three-pointers. Chowan's bench was also a major factor, contributing
36 points to VUU's 26.
"
Chowan was the better team tonight," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach
Alico Dunk. "
They outrebounded us and got to the free-throw line more than we did. That was the difference in the game. We have to play without fouling. We'll bounce back and be better next game."
Virginia Union will look to regroup quickly as the Panthers prepare for their
home opener against Ferrum College at
5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, inside
Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
