Gonzalez's Homers Key to Win Over ECSU

Virginia Union University's Lianna Gonzalez slugged two homers, including a game-tying 2-run shot with one out in the seventh inning, to lead VUU to a 10-7 win over Elizabeth City State University in the first game of a double-header on Thursday, April 6, in Elizabeth City, N.C.

VUU scored the eventual winning run when Kamryn Walker singled, driving in Darnae Jones.

Gonzalez also had two hits and drove in a run in the second game, but Elizabeth City State defeated the Panthers 7-2 in the nightcap.

"Game one we came out with a lot of energy," said VUU Head Softball Coach Dominique Mulero.  "On defense we cut down on our errors which I'm happy about. Our offense was led by Lianna Gonzalez, she was seeing the ball very well and Darnae Jones came up clutch in the big moments with two hits. In game two we gave up too many walks in the early innings. We came out flat the second game and that showed with our hitting. We had baserunners on just about every inning but could not capitalize on it until it was too late."

Virginia Union will now return home to face Shaw University on Thursday, April 13, in the 2023 home finale at 1:00 p.m. at the VUU Softball Field in Richmond, Va.
