Virginia Union University's
Jhakia Gist scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Lady Panthers to a 75-71 overtime win over Livingstone College on Monday, December 19, in Salisbury, N.C.
VUU's
Bruni Martinez pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds while teammate
Ny Langley had her sixth double-double of the season by scoring 13 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
Virginia Union's
Brittini Martinez also scored in double figures with 11 points.
"Today was a hard-fought grit match with Livingstone," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach
Tierra Terry. "They played extremely well, and we matched their toughness today. We had huge minutes from freshman
Bruni Martinez who grabbed 17 rebounds and had 8 points. Sophomore
Jhakia Gist really stepped up big for us with 16 points. Also,
Brittini Martin's 11 points and
Ny Langley's double-double were huge factors in a complete team win today. We also had so many people contribute in ways that do not show up on the stat sheet. We wanted to go into Christmas with two road wins and we accomplished our goal. We are very proud."
The Lady Panthers will return to action when they host Claflin University at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 5, in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
