VUU Goes to 7-0 with 27-24 Overtime Win

Virginia Union University's Jada Byers rushed for 277 yards and a touchdown while Brady Myers hit a 42-yard field goal to give VUU a dramatic 27-24 win over Bowie State University on Saturday, October 15, in Bowie, Md.
It was Bowie State's first home loss since the first game of the 2016 season and was BSU's first home loss to a CIAA team since 2014.
"Words cannot express how happy I am for this group," said VUU Head Football Coach Dr. Alvin Parker.  "They work extremely hard and have earned everything this season. The program went into a hostile environment against a very good team and put on a gritty performance and came out with a win. I love my team."
VUU's Jahkari Grant completed 12 of 22 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown while punter Marvin Holmes recorded the second-longest punt in VUU football history with a 73-yard bomb in the first quarter.  (The school record is 80 yards by Inman Breaux in 1927).
Byers' 277 yards puts him now at 1,373 yards for the season.  The school record is held by Andre Braxton with 1,660 yards in the 2000 season.
This is the first time a Virginia Union football team has started the season at 7-0 since the 1990 season.  The 1990 team finished at 10-2 and went to the NCAA playoffs.
Virginia Union will now travel to Lincoln University, Pa., to face Lincoln (Pa.) University at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22.
