Virginia Union University's football team saw its two-game win streak ended when Shaw University defeated the Panthers 27-7 on Saturday, October 2, at Willie Lanier Field at Hovey Stadium.

"We played far from our best game and Shaw played very well," said VUU Associate Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Dr.
Alvin Parker. "In any game mistakes are usually the key factors, and we made too many mistakes to give us a chance to win. Our job now is to focus on this week's opponent and right our wrongs."

Jada Byers rushed for 67 yards and scored the Panthers' lone touchdown when he took the ball in from one yard out with 8:57 left in the third quarter.

Khalid Morris connected on 11 of 20 passes for 125 yards.

James Jackson caught three passes for 58 yards, including a 26-yard catch in the third quarter.

Domantay Rhem had 11 tackles and returned an interception 44 yards.

The loss dropped VUU to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the CIAA. Shaw is now 3-2 overall and 2-0 in CIAA play.

Virginia Union now faces Lincoln University of Pennsylvania in the Panthers' Homecoming 2021 game at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 9, in Richmond, Va.
