Virginia Union University's softball team gained it's first win of the season when the Lady Panthers downed previously unbeaten Salem University 7-1 in the second game of a double-header on Sunday, February 16, at the VUU Softball Field in Richmond, Va.
VUU's
Audrenik Howard slugged a three-run homer which banged off the left field foul pole in the third inning to give the Lady Panthers all the runs they would need while teammate
Ericka Tiscareno struck out three and scattered four hits over seven innings to get the complete game win.
"After taking a loss in our game one home opener, I'm proud of our team's resiliency bouncing back to take game two," said Head Softball Coach
Sharika Joynes. "We had crafty pitching from
Ericka Tiscareno, stellar defense from
Mya Tino and an electrifying three-run homer by Audrey Howard. Overall, I'm happy with the way our team stayed together and picked each other up."
Tino had seven putouts in the double-header while collecting three hits of her own.
VUU is now 1-3 on the season while Salem is now 3-1.
Virginia Union now travels to Sumter, S.C., to compete in the CIAA-SIAC Crossover. The Lady Panthers will face Tuskegee University on Friday, February 21, Miles College and Clark Atlanta University on Saturday, February 22, and Kentucky State University and Benedict College on Sunday, February 23.
