Okoye's Buzzer-Beater Lifts VUU to Victory

Virginia Union University's Ifunanya Okoye hit a jumper at the buzzer to lift VUU to a 50-49 win over Elizabeth City State University on Wednesday, January 22, in Elizabeth City, N.C.

VUU trailed 49-41 with 3:42 left to play before going on a 9-0 run capped off by Okoye's jumper in the lane.

"We escaped ECSU with a victory on a last-second shot by Iffy Okoye," said VUU Head Women's Basketball Coach AnnMarie Gilbert.   "Although Iffy struggled offensively, she hit the game winning baske. She finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two assists. While Shameka McNeill was under the weather with a cold, she hit a huge three and played much needed lockdown defense at the end. She came up big in the second half and finished with 16 points, four rebounds and one steal. Jasmine Carter and Dy'Manee Royal each chipped in with six points and seven rebounds, respectively. Kishona Sutton added six points, four rebounds, one assist, and two steals.  We bend but we don't break. Our ladies stayed together and played with great resiliency to earn a tough win on the road."

The rain raised the 12th-ranked Lady Panthers to 15-2 overall and 6-1 in the CIAA.  Elizabeth City State fell to 7-12 overall and 3-6 in CIAA play.
