Virginia Union University's women's basketball team, ranked 12th in the nation, got strong performances from a veteran and a newcomer as the Lady Panthers defeated Palm Beach Atlantic University 66-50 on Wednesday, November 21, in West Palm Beach, Fla.
VUU's
Shareka McNeill, the 2018 CIAA Rookie of the Year, led the Lady Panthers with 17 points while newcomer
Ifunanya Okoye added 16 points in the win.
Virginia Union's
Nicole Floyd and
Jasmine Carter each scored 10 points to raise VUU's record to 4-0 on the season.
Carter also led the Lady Panthers with eight rebounds.
VUU's inside game was key to keeping the Lady Panthers undefeated. Virginia Union scored 38 points in the paint compared to Palm Beach Atlantic's 14 points.
The Lady Panthers' defense also played a strong part in the win. VUU held Palm Beach Atlantic's shooting to 36.5% (19 for 52).
Palm Beach Atlantic fell to 1-2 on the season.
Virginia Union now travels to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to compete in the Nova Southeastern Thanksgiving Classic. The Lady Panthers will face host Nova Southeastern University at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 23, and will then face Barry University at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 24.
