VUU Slams Defending CIAA Champs WSSU 37-14

Box Score Virginia Union University's William Stanback rushed for three touchdowns as the Panthers defeated defending CIAA champion Winston-Salem State University 37-14 on Saturday, September 17, in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Stanback rushed for 119 yards on 23 carries while quarterback Shawheem Dowdy was14-of-19 in passing for 212 yards and two touchdowns, Wide receiver Jusse Yorke caught 10 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns.

The Panthers racked up 421 yards and cut down on costly turnovers that had hurt them in their first two games.

The win broke a six-game win streak for Winston-Salem State over VUU and marked the Panthers' first win in Bowman-Gray Stadium since 2002.

After the Rams cut the Panthers lead to 14-7 when quarterback Rod Tinsley hit Carnard Brown with an 8-yard touchdown pass, it was Stanback who scored two consecutive touchdowns. His first one was a 30-yard run where he broke at least three tackles along the way; his second one was a 6-yard power run up the middle.

"We really didn't want to be 0-3 and that was our focus this whole week," said VUU Head Coach Mark James, whose Panthers won at Bowman Gray Stadium for the first time since 2002.

Trailing 27-7 at halftime, the Rams got the ball to open the second half and showed life by scoring when Brown (seven catches for 86 yards) caught his second touchdown pass to cut the lead to 27-14.

But that's as close as the Rams could come, even though Dowdy was replaced by backup quarterback Kenneth Graham midway through the third quarter. Dowdy suffered a slight knee injury and didn't return but Graham did enough to lead the Panthers to another touchdown and a field goal.
