Box Score Virginia Union University's Shawheem Dowdy tossed three touchdown passes, but Virginia State University defeated the Panthers 48-21 on Senior Day on Saturday, November 5, in Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.

Dowdy, playing in his final intercollegiate game, completed 14 of 23 passes for 250 yards.

Senior Jusse Yorke caught four passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns while freshman teammate Gustavious Dames caught two passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.

VUU's William Stanback solidified his CIAA Player of the Year credentials by rushing 25 times for 132 yards.  Stanback finished the 2016 season with 1,299 yards, the fourth highest total in VUU history.  Only Andre Braxton with 1,660 yards in 2000, 1,383 yards in 1997 and Bobby Phillips with 1,507 yards in 1993 have rushed for more yardage than Stanback.

Dowdy finished his career with 51 passing touchdowns, the third most in VUU history.  Only Lamar Little (67) and Carl Wright (59) had more passing touchdowns.

The loss gave VUU a final 5-5 overall record with a 4-3 CIAA record.  Virginia State finished 8-2 overall and 5-2 in CIAA play.
