Box Score Virginia Union University held Johnson C. Smith University to just 58 total offensive yards as the Panthers ran over the Golden Bulls 33-3 in football in Hovey Field on Saturday, September 26, in Richmond, Va.
By contrast, VUU racked up 428 offensive yards (263 through the air and 208 on the ground).
The Panthers defense held the Golden Bulls to negative-25 yards rushing on 20 attempts. They allowed 10 catches for 83 yards, but picked off each Johnson C. Smith quarterback once, recorded six sacks and allowed just one third-down conversion.
The first Virginia Union interception came on the Golden Bulls' second offensive play of the game.
Zachary Dunston got a hand on a Harold Herbin pass and
Stephan Robinson swooped in to make the catch and record the first Panther takeaway of the afternoon.
VUU's
Shawheem Dowdy completed 17 of 25 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns. Teammate
Hakeem Holland led the ground attack for VUU with 85 yards on 18 carries.
Virginia Union got on the scoreboard first when
Lamar Webster took the ball in from one yard out after
Stephan Robinson intercepted a Golden Bull pass.
VUU's
Beymar Piraquive hit two field goals while
Rashaun Smith pulled in a Dowdy pass for a four-yard touchdown score.
Smith would later add another touchdown when he took the ball in from one yard out.
The most spectacular score came when Dowdy hit teammate
Devin Anderson from 36 yards out for a touchdown. Anderson had five catches on the day for 95 yards.
VUU's
Anthony Cooper also recorded an interception.
The win raised VUU's record to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in CIAA play. Johnson C. Smith fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the CIAA.
VUU now travels to Raleigh, N.C., to face Shaw University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 3.
