Panthers Move to 4-1 With 31-9 Rout of Shaw

Box Score Virginia Union University's Donte Gross had 168 yards receiving and two touchdowns as VUU downed Shaw University 31-9 on Saturday, October 4, in Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.

The win moved VUU to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in CIAA play.  The 4-1 record is the best start for a Panther football team since 2008.

VUU's Kenneth Graham connected on 16-28 passes for 292 yards passing, the most yards passing since Cheston Hickman passed for 320 yards against Bowie State University on September 24, 2011.

Gross' 168 yards was the ninth-highest total ever in the history of VUU football, and the most for a VUU player since Joseph Jean-Pierre's 215 yards against Fayetteville State University in 2010.

VUU got on the board first when Troy Krepich hit a 43-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Union got on the board again when Graham hit Gross for a 74-yard scoring strike.

In the third quarter, Graham teamed up with Gross again for a 67-yard touchdown pass.

After quarterback Shawheem Dowdy punched his way in from one yard out for a touchdown, VUU turned to a double-pass combination.

Graham hit Jussie York with a lateral, and York then hit Devante Miller for a 30-yard touchdown pass.

VUU now readies itself for the 2014 Homecoming Game as the Panthers meet the Lions of Lincoln (Pa.) University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, in Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.
