Donte Gross had 168 yards receiving and two touchdowns as VUU downed Shaw University 31-9 on Saturday, October 4, in Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.
The win moved VUU to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in CIAA play. Â The 4-1 record is the best start for a Panther football team since 2008.
VUU's
Kenneth Graham connected on 16-28 passes for 292 yards passing, the most yards passing since Cheston Hickman passed for 320 yards against Bowie State University on September 24, 2011.
Gross' 168 yards was the ninth-highest total ever in the history of VUU football, and the most for a VUU player since Joseph Jean-Pierre's 215 yards against Fayetteville State University in 2010.
VUU got on the board first when
Troy Krepich hit a 43-yard field goal in the second quarter.
Union got on the board again when Graham hit Gross for a 74-yard scoring strike.Â
In the third quarter, Graham teamed up with Gross again for a 67-yard touchdown pass.
After quarterback
Shawheem Dowdy punched his way in from one yard out for a touchdown, VUU turned to a double-pass combination.
Graham hit
Jussie York with a lateral, and York then hit
Devante Miller for a 30-yard touchdown pass.
VUU now readies itself for the 2014 Homecoming Game as the Panthers meet the Lions of Lincoln (Pa.) University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, in Hovey Field in Richmond, Va.
