Jerrell Washington Becomes First 1,000-Yard Rusher Since 2000

Box Score Virginia Union University's Jerrell Washington rushed for 187 yards on 33 carries as VUU downed Virginia State University 19-14 in the season finale for both teams in Hovey Field in Richmond, Va., on Saturday, November 3.

Washington became the first VUU player to rush for more than 1,000 yards since Andre Braxton rushed for 1,660 yards in 2000.  Washington finished the season with 1,128 yards, the sixth-highest rushing total in school history.

VUU got on the board first when Jaques Bostick sacked VSU quarterback Jarred Battle in the end zone for a safety to give VUU a 2-0 lead.

Later on in the first quarter, VUU's Stephen Velasquez hit on a 29-yard field goal to stretch VUU's lead to 5-0.

Union went up 12-0 late in the second quarter when Kenneth Graham connected with Mantez Holmes from nine yards out for a touchdown.

After VSU scored a touchdown right before halftime, VUU's Richard Rodwell capped a 92-yard drive by taking it in from four yards out.

Virginia State scored a touchdown with 8:39 left in the fourth quarter, but VUU's defense stopped a late Trojan drive with less than two minutes remaining.

The win evened VUU's 2012 record at 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the CIAA.  Virginia State dropped to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the CIAA.
