VUU Comeback Fall Short Against Chowan

Box Score Virginia Union Universisty's Jerrell Washington returned a kickoff for a touchdown, but a late fourth-quarter drive stalled at the Chowan seven-yard line as a furious VUU comeback fell just short and Chowan University escaped with a 28-21 win over the Panthers in Murfreesboro, N.C., on Saturday, October 13.

Washington's 86-yard kickoff return came with VUU trailing 14-0 in the second quarter and pulled the Panthers to within 14-7 at halftime.

VUU tied the score 14-14 when quarterback Abe Coleman hitMatias Parker with a 60-yard pass in the third quarter.

After Chowan went up 28-14, VUU fought back again, this time with Graham hitting Trevon Winston from four yards out to make the score 28-21.

Chowan's eventual winning score came on a 54-yard interception return by Dakorian DeSamme in the fourth quarter.

Graham completed 19 of 45 passes for 274 yards and a touchdown.  Coleman hit 5-of-10 passes for 84 yards and another touchdown.

The loss drops VUU to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in CIAA play.  Chowan is now 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA.

VUU returns home to Historic Hovey Field to face Bowie State University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 20.  The game will be broadcast live on WFTH (1590 AM) in Richmond and on the internet at vuusports.com.
