Brian Smith Signs with the New York Jets

Virginia Union University's Brian Smith, who had 103 unassisted tackles during his career at VUU, has been signed by the New York Jets, the National Bowl said in a press release on Tuesday, April 30.

Smith, a 6-0 defensive back from Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Va., ranked fifth among the all-time leaders in tackles at VUU.  Smith finished his career behind Hurley Hemphill, Kevin Williams, Brandon Smith and Arthur Brown in Panthers history.

Smith also tied for second place among the all-time VUU leaders in Pass Breakups with 25.  Paul DeBerry had 33 pass breakups from 1989-91 while Recco Greenhow had 25 breakups in 1991-92.

Smith also blocked four kicks during his career at VUU.

Smith was one of only two Division II players chosen to play in the 2013 National Bowl All-Star Game.
