Virginia Union University's football team, which came within a coin flip of going to the CIAA Championship Game in 2009, has been picked to finish third in the Northern Division of the CIAA, the CIAA announced at the 2010 Football Kickoff Press Conference, held on July 22 at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va.
The Panthers, who finished 6-4 last season, were named to finish behind Bowie State University and Elizabeth City State University in the Northern Division.
Overall, VUU was picked to finish fifth in the CIAA, with Fayetteville State University being named the top team in the CIAA.
Senior offensive lineman
David Mims, senior defensive back
Andre LeBlanc II, and senior defensive lineman
Zach Hope were named to the All-CIAA team.
Mims has been named to two pre-season All-American teams while LeBlanc was second on the team with 40 tackles in 2009. Hope had 15 tackles and led the Panthers with six sacks in 2009.
VUU opens the season on August 28 when the Panthers travel to High Point, N.C., to meet Winston-Salem State University. The game marks the first intercollegiate football game in High Point in 60 years.
